CONSTRUCTION LAB
During the Construction in-depth lab, we had to design and make our own kimono. It was important to have substantial research on the topic, especially since it already sparked a conversation in class about whether it could be considered appropriation or appreciation.
I focused my research on the use of the kimono and found out that the shape and color change for the occasion the kimono is worn. I chose the kimono that is supposed to be worn when one comes of age. I combined this with the colors grey-silver for those mean: Maturity & Strength. Something I found fitting with one's coming of age.
The fabrics are old curtains that I trifted in a store near me. I used the pattern we got and changed the length of the kimono and the sleeves. I did not have much knowledge on pattern making, so didn’t want to make the design too complicated.
I really enjoyed working on this project, being able to come up with a concept, based on thorough research and then create a garment out of it. This helped me to choose the dimension Design and sparked my passion for sewing again.
